The Fortnight for Freedom: Freedom to Serve will take place in the Diocese of Rockville Centre and in every Diocese in the country from June 21 to July 4, 2014, a time when our liturgical calendar celebrates a series of great martyrs who remained faithful in the face of persecution by political power—Saint Thomas More and Saint John Fisher, Saint John the Baptist, Saints Peter and Paul, and the First Martyrs of the Church of Rome. The theme of this year's Fortnight will focus on the freedom to serve the poor and vulnerable in accord with human dignity and the Church's teaching.
The Most Reverend William Murphy, Bishop, Diocese of Rockville Centre will open the Fortnight for Freedom in the Diocese of Rockville Centre on Saturday, June 21, 2014. He will be the principal celebrant and homilist at the 5:00 p.m. anticipatory Mass at the Cathedral of Saint Agnes. This Mass will air live on Telecare Television (Cablevision Channel 29/137, Verizon FiOS 296 and TimeWarner Channel 471). Telecare will rebroadcast the Mass on Sunday, June 22 at 11:00 a.m. and at 7pm.
Then a Rally for Religious Freedom will take place at Saint John the Baptist Diocesan High School, East Islip on Saturday, June 28 from 10:00 a.m.– Noon. Bishop Murphy will keynote the rally with his address, “Religious Freedom: A Worldwide Struggle.” Thomas Renker, general counsel, Diocese of Rockville Centre will provide an update on the HHS mandate litigation. Also speaking will be Bishop Andrzej Zglejszewski, Auxiliary Bishop, Diocese of Rockville Centre and Barbara Samuells, representing Catholics for Freedom of Religion.
During the Fortnight, many parishes across Long Island will recognize the importance of religious liberty through special prayer opportunities for prayer and the inviting of guest speakers. Visit www.licatholic.org and your parish bulletin for details concerning these and other fortnight events.
Through prayer, study, and peaceful public action during the Fortnight for Freedom, we hope to remind ourselves and others all throughout the United States about the importance of preserving the fundamental right of religious freedom.
To conclude the Fortnight, a closing Mass will be celebrated on Friday, July 4, 2014 at 12:10 p.m. in the Cathedral of Saint Agnes by Bishop Robert Brennan, Auxiliary Bishop of the Diocese of Rockville Centre.
